Southern Gospel music has always had the ‘novelty’ song. What is a novelty song you may ask. A novelty song, while fun, has no lasting impact on the listener; other than the two to three minutes the song is being performed.
The biggest novelty song in the history of the genre, is the Stuart Hamblen classic, “First Day In Heaven”. I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me every quartet in Southern Gospel music staged this song at some point in their career.
Some may be surprised I consider this one of the least remarkable songs in Southern Gospel music, but again; zero lasting impact except for the two to three minutes of the performance.
Here is a YouTube clip of the biggest showmen in the history of the genre performing this novelty tune. The Statesmen and “First Day In Heaven”.
