DID YOU KNOW?: The Speer Family legacy spanned over 75 years in Southern Gospel music. While the group had a couple of #1 songs toward the end of their career, Southern Gospel fans never really gave the group any recognition when it came to ‘fan’ awards. The only Singing News fan award the group won came in 1989 when group member Jane Greene won horizon individual. That didn’t matter, because the industry understood the talent of the Speer Family as they dominated the Dove Awards in the 1970’s. The group won mixed group of the year at the Dove Awards in 1969, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977. Sue Dodge won female vocalist from 1972 to 1974 and Jeanne Johnson won the same category in 1975. It didn’t stop there, as the Speer Family also won Album of the year back to back in 1975 (I Feel Like Something Good Is About To Happen) and 1976 (Between The Cross And Heaven). I have always considered industry voted (among peers) awards programs more prestigious than ‘fan’ voted awards. Southern Gospel needs to return to that and have one industry voted awards program per year.
