Southern Gospel Tidbits

dwaynefriend1967pickshappygoodmanhitsmaxDID YOU KNOW?:  The co-writer to one of Southern Gospel’s biggest Easter songs, “The Night Before Easter”, was a man by the name of Dwayne Friend.  While most Southern Gospel listeners are familiar with the other half of the co-writing team, Donnie Sumner; the name Dwayne Friend is rarely mentioned among today’s Southern Gospel listeners.  Dwayne was a member of the Blackwood Brothers band during the time “The Night Before Easter” was written and first recorded.  He was an accomplished musician winning a Dove Award in both 1969 and 1970 for instrumentalist of the year.  No less than two dozen artists recorded “The Night Before Easter” in the first five years of the song’s release.  The song picked up the Dove Award in 1970 for song of the year.  Happy Easter!

  1. I have that album by Dwayne Friend and have always enjoyed it. He was one of the best instrumentalists of his day. Thanks for the video of “The Night Before Easter,” as I had not heard that song for many years.
