SYNOPSIS:

Southern Gospel radio has introduced me to more artists than I care to count.  Another such case happened upon hearing “Turn Back Time” by a group I did not recognize.  When the radio announced it was the Wisecarvers, I had to find out more about the group and this particular song.

March 19th, 2013 gave listeners the release of the Wisecarver’s latest album, Journey.  The Wisecarvers is a family group who create a traditional country/progressive Southern Gospel sound.

The sound is built around lead vocalist Chase Wisecarver who tackles most of the leads for the group.  Father Vince provides harmony vocals and plays acoustic guitar while mother Tammy provides harmony vocals.  Son, Dustin also provides harmony vocals while playing harmonica and bass guitar and his wife Kaila provides harmony/lead vocals while playing piano.

The family is also talented songwriters having penned all eight new songs found on Journey.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Lead vocalist Chase Wisecarver immediately stands out with his commanding lead voice.  It shapes the sound for the entire group.  He is featured on several stand out tracks, the biggest being “Turn Back Time”.  This traditional country ballad is a heartfelt story of being able to change certain things if we could just turn back time.  A must listen!
  • Chase also takes the lead on a progressive Southern Gospel ballad “Grace Tore The Veil”.  This would make a great Southern Gospel radio single.  Chase doesn’t stop there as he is also featured on the group’s newest single, “I Need You”.  This song is taken right out of the Crabb Family playbook in terms of vocal delivery.
  • Kaila spent several years with the Bradys before marrying Dustin and joining the Wisecarvers.  She really adds that Southern Gospel punch to the group with her powerful female vocals.  Her lead on “One Prayer At A Time” is a great Southern Gospel feature.  She also penned this stand out track.
  • Father Vince Wisecarver provides his traditional country vocal on a ‘hard driving’ country tune, “In Jesus’ Name We Trust”.
  • Two more must listen to tracks also feature Chase.  “Only Good To Me” found several repeats before moving to the rest of the album and “Just Fine” is another power house tune
  • Strongest songs included in order:  “Turn Back Time”, “Grace Tore The Veil”, “I Need You”, “One Prayer At A Time”, “Only Good To Me”, “Just Fine” and “In Jesus’ Name We Trust”.
CRITIQUE:
  • As has been the case with most albums I’ve reviewed in 2013, the song covers are the weakest part about the album.  “Thank You Lord For Your Blessings On Me” has made its rounds of late.  Another cut of this song was not needed.
  • The Speer classic, “Heaven’s Jubilee”, has also been over-recorded lately.
  • Weakest songs included in order:  “Thank You Lord For Your Blessings On Me”, “Heaven’s Jubilee” and “I Wouldn’t Take Nothing For My Journey Now”.

WRAP UP:

It has been back to back weeks now that I have been blown away by new artist recordings.  Last week High Road III impressed me with their originality.  This week the Wisecarvers also impressed with the vocal strength of lead vocalist Chase on songs that stand up to any of the major artist albums I have listened to in 2013.  As I stated in last week’s review, do yourself a favor and give the Wisecarvers, Journey a listen.

  1. If you could make it a regular feature to provide artist websites with your reviews, that might be a nice touch. Not that using google is that stressful, but I like being able to click to a website right away.
