Most Influential – #24 – Talleys

talleysThis week finds the artist ranked 24th among the most influential in Southern Gospel history; the Talleys.

Roger, Debra and Kirk Talley all got their start with the Hopper Brothers and Connie.  Kirk then moved on to sing tenor with the Cathedrals before joining forces with Roger and Debra to form the Talleys in 1983.

The Talleys continue in 2013 with Roger, Debra and daughter Lauren.

  • talleys1986unitedmax (247x250)The Talleys progressive (MOR) Southern Gospel style of the 1980’s separated them from many of the groups touring during that time period.  Sharing the concert stage with the Cathedrals during this era didn’t hurt either.
  • The Talleys influence was felt and seen in other artist’s music that came after.  They include:  Booth Brothers, Aaron & Amanda Crabb, Crist Family, Dills, Hope’s Call, LordSong, Ruppes, Shulers and Sweeter Rain.
  • The Talleys are given the dubious distinction of being one of the first Southern Gospel artists to move to all tracks in the 1980’s.
  • Hit Songs:  “Answer Is Christ”, “Applause”, “Broken Ones”, “Broken World”, “The Debt”, “For Every Generation”, “God Is Able”, “God’s Gonna Send Revival”, “Hallelujah Praise The Lamb”, “Hands Of Grace”, “The Healer”, “He Is Here”, “He Won’t Take Back One Promise”, “He’s Alive”, “His Life For Mine”, “I Am What I Am”, “I Love The Lord”, “If Anybody Knows”, “I’m Free”, “Instrument Of Power”, “Jesus Saves”, “Life Goes On”, “Make Way For The Master”, “Mountain Mover”, “My Hope Is In The Lord”, “No Other Word For Grace But Amazing”, “Not The Half Has Been Told”, “Orphans Of God”, “Past Your Past”, “Searchin”, “Simply Unexplainable”, “Sweeter As The Days Go By”, “Testify”, “There’s Still Power In The Blood”, “Thinking About Home”, “Triumphantly The Church Will Rise” and “Typical Day”.
  • Best Album:  United (1986)

Here is a YouTube clip, published by gospelvideohub, of the Talleys in 1987  performing their first #1 song, “Sweeter As The Days Go By”.  Enjoy!
