This week starts with another new feature for 2012; the Southern Gospel song hall of fame. It’s all about the song and this feature will honor the best Southern Gospel songs ever written. Shining the spotlight on songs that define the Southern Gospel music genre and the writers behind those compositions.
It is fitting that the first song to be inducted into the Southern Gospel song hall of fame is “The Lighthouse”. Ronny Hinson’s famed composition became an instant hit when first recorded in the early 1970′s. Now, some forty years later, “The Lighthouse” is a true Southern Gospel music classic.
I would venture to say “The Lighthouse” has been recorded by more Southern Gospel music artists than any other song in the last forty years. Ronny Hinson’s songwriting career is filled with many great songs and “The Lighthouse” will not be the only Ronny Hinson composition to be inducted into the Southern Gospel song hall of fame. But if you ask any long time Southern Gospel listener their favorite Ronny Hinson song, you will be hard pressed to find another song listed outside “The Lighthouse”.
In honor of our first inductee into the Southern Gospel song hall of fame, here is a montage of artists performing Ronny Hinson’s “The Lighthouse”.
