I just got in from a second home town concert this weekend. Gold City was in concert at the Williamson Chapel in Mooresville NC (09/11/11). This was my first chance to see the group live since Dan Keeton came aboard as the group’s tenor singer. Gold City performed for about an hour and twenty minutes rolling out many Gold City standards.
I enjoyed hearing the group on songs such as ”Shoutin’ Ground”, “I’m Not Giving Up”, “Where Is God”, “When I Get Carried Away” and ”Under Control”. The group closed with “Midnight Cry” and the performance had the crowd on their feet. There were times during the group’s set where there were shades of brilliance. Thinking that if this group has several years together they could be really strong. Then there were other times during the set when it just wasn’t there.
Especially on the Gold City standards, one is used to that powerful tenor (whether Brian Free or Jay Parrack) come in and just take over the chorus of a song. That was missing from the program tonight. Dan did have the crowd on its feet for his performance of the oft performed quartet standard “Oh What A Savior”.
All in all I enjoyed the concert and look forward to the new recording to see what this line-up put together.
