The Best Song Of 2011? Too Early?

Posted: March 1, 2011 by Steve Eaton in Commentary

Award shows abound in our society.  Everything from the Grammys to the Oscars to the Emmys and beyond.  I would venture to say every musical genre has an award of some sort to honor those in their respective fields.

I said all that to say this.  The nominating process is already under way for the 2011 Singing News Fan Awards that will take place the end of September 2011.  With any musical awards show, I don’t take stock in any of the artist categories.  It really doesn’t matter to me who wins favorite group or best tenor and favorite artist toupee.  While interesting to see fan favorites from year to year, popularity is fading.

The only category that I keep an eye on is the song of the year.  Great songs will live on long after the artist.  So with that I want to offer what I feel should be the (10) nominees for the 2011 song of the year.  While the eligibility period for this award goes back to the beginning of 2010, I am only looking at the last six months for songs that have already or will continue to make an impact.

  1. “God Saw A Cross” – Kingsmen (Rodney Griffin), Missing People
  2. “Hold On” – Dove Brothers (McCray Dove), Hold On
  3. I Need You More Today” – Jeff & Sheri Easter (Dawn Smoot Doss), Expecting Good Things
  4. I Thirst” – Ernie Haase & Signature Sound (Beverly Lowry), A Tribute To The Cathedral Quartet
  5. “Love Came Calling” – Triumphant Quartet (Wayne Haun, Joel Lindsey), Love Came Calling
  6. Never Been” – Greater Vision (Rodney Griffin), Welcome Back
  7. Never Walk Alone” – Brian Free & Assurance (Jeremy Johnson, JP Williams), Never Walk Alone
  8. Pray Anyway” – Bowling Family (Becky Bowman, Sonya Isaacs), Shine
  9. When God Has Another Plan” – Greenes (Amy Keffer Shellum, Daryl Williams), Far Down The Road
  10. When There’s No Hope (There Is Grace)” – Dunaways (Rick Hendrix), It’s A God Thing

So what songs do you feel should be nominated for song of the year in 2011?
